Semi-Finals Set Up as Summer League Draws to a Close
Updated 28 July 2008
The last two weeks of the Ernst & Young Touch Summer League look set to be a thrilling finale of the fourth season.
With 36 teams taking part in the mixed, mens and womens leagues, the first five weeks were played as a round robin with the mixed and the mens team then being split into leagues dependent on their positions after the first half of the season. The womens league has continued to play a round robin for the second half.
‘It’s hard to believe that we have just two weeks left of what has undoubtedly been our best season yet. We have had a record number of teams taking part and it has been fantastic to see the newcomers making steady progress throughout the league and the more established teams coming up against each other in what have been some exciting games of touch,’ said Guernsey Touch chairman Andrew Hutton.
‘It’s still very hard to name who the eventual winners will be as the semi-finals will no doubt have some close fought games and possibly some shock results.’
This week sees the semi-finals taking place before next week’s final games at Blanche Pierre Lane.
In Mixed A, Brotown is the only team to have won all five of its second half of the season games and plays Argyll Investments in one semi-final. In the other semi-final, second place CISX Untouchables, who have lost just one game, take on third placed Source Sorcerers with fifth and sixth placed Specsavers Sharks and Mercator playing each other.
Two teams, Partners Group and Cool as Day are tied at the top of Mixed B, having both won four games each but Cool as Day take the lead on try difference and so find themselves against Ogier Mixed in one Mixed B semi-final. In the other Partners Group take on Martel-Dunn Recruits with PwC Mixed and Specsavers Squirrels involved in the play-off for fifth and sixth.
As the only team in Mixed C to have won all five of their games Panthers Mixed are top and will play fourth placed One Touch (Ozannes) with the other semi-final in Mixed C taking place between Deloitte and Touch and Lloyds Touch Spring Box. Healthspan and Generali are involved in the play-off.
