Competition Gets Tougher

Updated 27 June 2008

After five weeks of play the mixed and mens teams in the Ernst & Young Touch Summer League have been re-graded for the last half of the season.

The first half of the league for the 18 mixed and 12 mens teams has been played as a round robin but now teams have been split into new tables depending on their finishing position after the first five weeks.

‘With new teams forming and new players registering, it was impossible to know which were the stronger teams and so a round robin was the fairest way of starting the 2008 Ernst & Young Touch Summer,’ said Guernsey Touch chairman Andrew Hutton.

‘The second half of the season will be even more competitive as teams will be much more evenly matched and as they’re all heading towards their own semi-finals and finals, there really is everything to play for.’

Brotown, CISX Untouchables, Specsavers Sharks, Mercator, Source Sorcerers and Mercator make up Mixed A and there were excellent performances in all three games. Brotown have a one try advantage to take the top spot after their 4 – 1 win over Argyll Investments. CISX Untouchables also have three points but a try difference of just two after beating Source Sorcerers 4 – 2. They share second place with Specsavers Sharks who beat Mercator 4 – 2.

Mixed B sees Cool as Day, Ogier Mixed, Partners Group, Martel-Dunn Recruits, Specsavers Squirrels and PwC Mixed battling for the title. Cool As Day lead the table on try difference after a 7 – 2 win over PwC Mixed. Ogier Mixed’s 5 – 3 win over Specsavers Squirrels puts them second and Partners Group are in third after their 3 – 2 win over Martel-Dunn Recruits.

Panthers Mixed used their experience from previous season to secure the lead of Mixed C after a 6 – 2 win over One Touch (Ozannes). Having beaten Healthspan 4 – 3, Lloyds Touch Spring Box also have three points but are in second on try difference and Deloitte and Touch are third after their 3 – 2 win over Generali.

Green Armee lead Mens A after scoring the highest number of tries of the night with an 8 – 1 win over Specsavers Stags. Clubhouse Casuals 6 – 1 win against Resolution IT puts them second and a close fought game between CISX’s Anzacs and Leftabels ended in a 5 – 4 victory for the Anzacs who are in third.

In Mens B, Ogier Men just lead on for tries after a 5 -3 win over TBC. Martel-Dunn Recruits have the same points and try difference as the leaders but take second place following their 2 – 0 win over PwC Mens. Deloitte and Touch are in third after their game against Panthers Mens ended 2 – 1.

With only one womens league, the six teams continue to play a round robin until the semi-finals at the end of July. Touchy Feely continue to lead on try difference after they were awarded a 2 – 0 victory against Girls Aloud (Ozannes) who were unable to field a team due to holidays and injury. Last year’s winners GPG/Womens Touch are in second with only one try separating them and Touchy Feely. Their game against Specsavers Sirens ended in a 5 - 2 victory. CSIX Untouchables are in third after their 3 – 2 win over Martel-Dunn Recruits.
