MIXED TABLES MIXED UP AT HALF WAY STAGE
THE 17 mixed teams in the Ernst & Young Touch Summer League have been re-graded as the season starts to head towards finals night.
After five weeks of games, the three new mixed tables have been formed dependent on each team’s performance since the start of the season. The top two teams from each table will come together in Mixed A, the middle two teams form Mixed B and the bottom teams form Mixed C.
‘At the start of the season, it can be extremely hard to know how all of the teams are going to perform and so randomly forming the tables for the first five weeks of round-robin games and then re-grading is the fairest way,’ said Guernsey Touch chair Katrina Bray.
‘Now teams will be playing against other teams of a similar standard so it becomes even more competitive and it will be interesting to see which of the teams make their impression on their respective tables.’
The new Mixed A table is made up of Brotown, Mercator, Source Sorcerers, Partners Group, Breda Barbarians, Specsavers Sharks. Brotown, Source Sorcerers and Breda Barbarians all finished top of their tables with five wins. Partners Group and Specsavers Sharks had one less win to finish second in their respective tables and three wins for Mercator put them second in theirs.
The new Mixed B table is made up of PwC, Lloyds TSB, Argyll Investments, Martel-Dunn Recruits, Panthers, Careys Crusaders. PwC and Argyll both won three out of five games to move into Mixed B with Lloyds TSB, Panthers and Carey Crusaders each winning two and Martel-Dunn winning just one but securing their Mixed B place on try difference.
Touch & Go, Specsavers Scorpions, Cool As Day, Panthers Bee and Ogier will form Mixed C after coming up against stronger and more experienced teams in the first five weeks. Cool As Day, Touch & Go and Ogier have all won a game with Panthers Bee and Specsavers Scorpions eager to win their first games of the season as they move into their new table.
The 10 teams taking part in the men’s league will continue with their round-robin competition until the semi-final and final stages of the competition. Breda Barbarians is the only team to win all five of their games and so take top spot with 15 points and an impressive try difference of 30 as a result of scoring 33 tries and having only three scored against them.
RG Falla’s Green Armee is in second on try difference having won four games and just behind them and also with four wins under their belts are the former Isabels team who have secured a sponsor and have re-branded as Source Temps’ Tigers. Specsavers Stags have also won all four of their games but their try difference of just six puts them in fourth.
Resolution IT is the only mens team to have won three games and is in fifth with PwC two points behind in sixth. Deloitte also has nine points but take seventh position on try difference. Cornerstone Exiles are eighth having won game out of five. Martel-Dunn Recruits and Chameleon are still looking for their first win but Martel-Dunn Recruits are just ahead in ninth position following Chameleon’s default in the first week as they put their team together.
Guernsey Post’s Fe-mails continue to lead the ladies table and their five wins have seen them score 29 tries and concede just three. GPG Women’s Touch has also conceded just three tries but their defeat against Fe-mails earlier in the season means they’re in second place with 13 points.
Martel-Dunn Recruits are in third having won three of their games with Specsavers Sirens in fourth on nine points following their two wins. The newly formed Guernsey Ladies Rugby, who are using the Summer League as preparation for their first season, are in fifth thanks to a bye in week three.
‘It’s been a great season so far and it’s fantastic to see some different
players stealing the limelight every week. The sport lost some excellent
players at the end of last season but there is no doubt that we have
found some new ones this year,’ said Bray.
