Updated 8 August 2008
The biggest ever touch league ended with two thrilling drop-offs.
With a record 36 teams taking part in this year’s Ernst & Young Summer Touch League, the final night of games was the highlight of the 12 week season.
‘It was a fantastic end to what has been our most successful season to date. There have been some great games in the run-up to the semi-finals and finals but the standard has yet again been raised over the last two weeks and there are some teams who will be challenging the more established teams next year,’ said Guernsey Touch chairman Andrew Hutton.
In the Mixed A final Brotown met Source Sorcerers in what was set to be a close fought battle. After 25 minutes the game was tied at 2 – 2 and so each team went down to five players and it was less than two minutes before Brotown took the trophy thanks to the pace of Rory Jones who scored the winning try. CISX Untouchables scored the highest total of the night in their third and fourth place-off with Argyll which ended in a 10 – 0 win for CISX Untouchables. Playing for fifth and sixth Mercator and Specsavers Sharks met twice in the semi-final and finals week. In the first game Specsavers Sharks won 6 – 4 and in the second Mercator won 4 – 2 to make it 8 – 8 on aggregate and a tie for fifth.
In the Mixed B final Partners Group came out on top after beating Cool As Day 2 – 1. Martel-Dunn Recruits took third after Ogier Mixed was unable to field a team and forfeited the game and Specsavers Squirrels and PwC Mixed resumed their battle for fifth and sixth place which last week ended in a 4 – 2 win for Specsavers Squirrels. This week the victory changed hands with PwC Mixed scoring six and Specsavers adding three more to their tally to end the game 8 – 7 to PwC Mixed on aggregate.
In the Mixed C final it was Panthers who were celebrating after beating Deloitte and Touch 4 – 1. One Touch (Ozanne) took third place after a 4 – 2 win over Lloyds Touch Springbox who were playing their first season of touch. Having met last week Healthspan and Generali played the second leg of their fixture. There were tries aplenty with this week’s game ending in a 7 – 3 win for Healthspan who took fifth place with a 9 – 4 win on aggregate.
In the Mens A Final Green Armee took the trophy after a passionate game against CISX Anzacs. Leftabels came third overall after a 3 – 1 win over Clubhouse Casuals and Resolution IT just took fifth after a 3 – 2 win on aggregate over Specsavers Stags.
In the Mens B finals PwC and Deloitte and Touch met with Deloitte and Touch just taking the trophy with a 1- 0 win. Martel-Dunn Recruits had a convincing 7 – 1 win over Panthers Men to take third and TBC took fifth through a walkover after Ogier Men was unable to field a team.
In the Womens final Touchy Feely and GPG/A Woman’s Touch met once again having both played in last year’s final. The game was the hardest fought of the night with the game ending 1 – 1 at full time which forced a drop-off down to five players. After two minutes and with no tries scored, it was down to four players and then two minutes later down to three. Sonia Hewitt came close to scoring the winning try for Touchy Feely but a touch on the line was called and moments later Clio Phelan found a space on the wing and scored for GPG/A Woman’s who took the trophy once again. CISX Untouchables and Specsavers Sirens played for second and third place with a convincing 6 – 0 win for Untouchables. Martel-Dunn Recruits and Girls Aloud met again in the play-off for fifth and sixth and drew 0 – 0 to share fifth.
After the trophies had been handed out, the Most Valued Player awards were announced for each league. Each week teams nominated an MVP from the opposing team and this is collated at the end of the season. Daisy Scott was named for Mixed A League, Rupert Iles for Mixed B and Alex Burt for Mixed C. Tom Strawbridge was named for Mens A and Tristan Boscher for Mens B with Hannah De Carteret taking the award for Women’s MVP.
