NO CLEAR WINNERS WITH JUST FIVE WEEKS LEFT OF ERNST & YOUNG TOUCH SUMMER LEAGUE

NONE of the five tables in the Ernst & Young Touch Summer League have obvious contenders for the top spots with less than half the season left.

Just five weeks are left of the 12-week league and after the three mixed tables were re-graded at the half way point, the games have been far closer.

‘The second half of the season is always more exciting as teams have been playing together long enough to gel which makes them even more competitive. We’ve already had some unexpected results and I’m sure there are a few more to come which will have a huge impact on the line-up for semi-finals and finals,’ said Guernsey Touch chair Katrina Bray.

Three teams are tied at the top of Mixed A after the first games of the second half of the season ended in wins for three of the teams. Source Sorcerers take top spot with a try difference of eight after a 6 – 2 win followed by a 5 – 1 win. Breda Barbarians are in second place with a try difference of five after scoring eight tries in two games and Mercator are just behind with a try difference of four after last week’s unexpected 6 – 3 win over Brotown.

Argyll Investments have started to find their form after coming together just days before the start of the season and are the only team in Mixed B to have won both their games. They take top spot with six points. Five teams all have four points after each winning one game. PwC and Martel-Dunn Recruits both have try differences of three but it is PwC who take second place having scored 11 tries compared to Martel-Dunn’s eight. Carey Crusaders are in fourth and Panthers are in fifth with Lloyds TSB at the bottom and looking for their first win in the new group.

In Mixed C, it is only tries scored which separates the top two teams. Specsavers Scorpions and Cool As Day both have six points after two wins but it’s Specsavers Scorpions who take the top spot after scoring 10 compared to Cool As Day’s seven. Ogier is in third place with four points having beaten Panthers Bee and lost to Cool As Day, Panthers Bee is in fourth place and Touch & Go is in fifth. A new name appears in Mixed C after league sponsor Ernst & Young and KPMG came together to form a team called Scotland and they will play their first game on Wednesday.

Breda Barbarians lead the Men’s table after seven wins out of seven which gives them 21 points and an impressive try difference of 46 having scored 51 tries and conceding just five. There are three teams vying for second place with RG Falla’s Green Armee, Source Temps’ Tigers and Specsavers Stags all on points having won six of their games but on try difference it’s RG Falla’s Green Armee in second, Source Temps’ Tigers in third and Specsavers Stags in fourth. Resolution IT has won four games and are in fifth, the teams from accountants PwC and Deloitte have both won two games but PwC takes sixth on try difference to leave Deloitte seventh. Cornerstone Exiles and Martel-Dunn Recruits have won just one game and are in eighth and ninth and the veterans in Chameleon are still chasing their first win.

Having met earlier in the season, it was a different result when GPG Women’s Touch and Guernsey Post’s Fe-mails met for a second time. Their first game ended in a win for Guernsey Post’s Fe-mails but with the second game ending in a 4 – 1 win for GPG Women’s Touch they are on equal points with Women’s Touch ahead on try difference. Martel-Dunn Recruits and Specsavers Sirens have both won four games but it is Martel-Dunn in third on try difference. Guernsey Ladies Rugby is in fifth after a bye.

The Ernst & Young Touch Summer League takes place on Wednesdays from 6pm at Blanche Pierre Lane.
